About the Oregon Rangelands Website

Welcome to the Oregon AgNIC Rangelands web site!

The Oregon Rangelands web site is maintained by Eastern Oregon Agricultural Research Center, a partner in the AgNIC Alliance, which is a national effort to create an electronic network that will provide seamless access to distributed sources of agricultural information, subject area specialists, and other resources in a manner in which the physical location of these resources is transparent to the user. Agricultural information as used here is defined as that produced by basic, applied, and developmental research, extension, and teaching activities in the food, agricultural, renewable natural resources, forestry, and physical and social sciences.

Construction of the Oregon Rangelands web site is significant for a number of reasons. It is a collaborative effort between the OSU librarians and rangeland experts committed to working together for a common goal. The Oregon Rangelands web site will be a selective, centralized resource with an integrated interface. In addition, when critical information is not yet available in electronic form, the Oregon AgNIC Project will seek to create or support creation of such electronic resources (for example, the digitized backfiles of the Journal of Range Management developed by the Arizona AgNIC Project Team).

We feel that we have put a great deal of care and effort into creating a useful site and that the final effort in that process is making potential users into actual users.

Mission

Our mission is to provide electronic access to the full scope of information in the field of rangelands and rangeland management to people everywhere and of all knowledge levels by collecting, creating, evaluating, and organizing relevant resources.

Scope of Subject

As described in Introduction to Rangelands and Rangeland Management, "Rangelands are a type of land, not a use of land. They are not urban land and they are not agricultural land. They do include some forests, some woodlands and other vegetation types not usually associated with range, but primarily, rangelands are grasslands, shrublands, savannas, and grasslands with scattered trees and shrubs."
